Pelvic Floor Exercise

The pelvic floor muscle (more correctly the pubococcygeus or PC muscle) is the hammock-like muscle that stretches from the pubic bone to the coccyx. Its function is to support the pelvic organs and internal genitalia. A strong pelvic floor muscle is helpful during childbirth, is key to greater urinary control and also contributes to more intense sensations during intimacy.

Kegel exercises, named after Dr Arnold Kegel, the American gynaecologist who developed them, are designed to strengthen the pelvic floor muscle. The exercises are most doctor's first-line treatment for urinary stress incontinence and female genital prolapse. Generally, Kegel exercises rely on the  use of small, often ball-shaped weights, placed internally. The downward "drag" of gravity caused by these small weights prompts a spontaneous reaction of the perineum which, in turn, stimulates the pelvic floor muscle to tighten-up.

When used over a period of time, Kegel exercise balls provide an effective and natural way to tone the pelvic floor muscle - they are particularly recommended for women to use after childbirth or pelvic surgery, those wishing to gain improved urinary control and anyone wishing to intensify the sensations they feel during intimate relations.
