Biofeedback with eSense Temperature: The eSense Temperature device is a small sensor designed to measuring the warmth of your skin. It does this by using a small temperature sensor which is held between the fingers. The readings from the sensor are then fed through the microphone input of your smartphone or tablet (Android or Apple iOS.), to show you the second-by-second changes in the temperature of your hands. Handwarming training is an especially effective form of biofeedback which has been widely used by doctors and psychologists for many years to teach stress reduction and relaxation. It has also been employed in non-clinical settings, such as occupational and executive development programmes, where it is used to help executives and others to learn to control their levels of stress. The development of the eSense Temperature device has brought the technology needed for handwarming biofeedback within range of most people's budgets, and so now, finally, it's available for use at home.

Why bother learning to warm your hands? Well, the temperature of our hands is connected to our stress level: When we are stressed, we tend to have cold hands. And it turns out (from the research) that by being given immediate and on-going feedback about the temperature of your hands, you can learn to gain voluntary control of your skin temperature. This, results in reduced feelings of stress and increased feelings of relaxation. So, this is where the eSense Temperature device comes into its own. By precisely measuring the momentary changes skin temperature, it gives you all the information you need to start learning to control the warmth of your hands and reduce your levels of stress. The eSense Temperature provides a choice of ways to observe changes in your hand temperature. For example, with measurement curves, video display or with audio feedback. For audio biofeedback, the eSense Temperature device also has a headphone jack, so that you can listen to relaxing music, binaural beats, or other audio input whilst following the changes in your skin temperature. The eSense App, available for download, free of charge, allows the export of measurement data via e-mail.
Here's more about the science behind Skin Temperature: The temperature of the skin's surface changes in accordance with the amount of blood circulating through it. Looking specifically at the fingers (which is where the eSense device records temperature fluctuations), there is a network of tiny blood vessels known as arterioles just below the skin surface and these arterioles are surrounded by fine strands of smooth muscle that are controlled by the nervous system. When we find ourselves in a state of increased stress, the fine muscle fibres surrounding the arterioles tense-up and this has the effect of squeezing and narrowing these tiny blood vessels. As a result, there is a reduction in the flow of blood through the fingers and, the skin temperature of the fingers begins to drop. The opposite is also true; when we're in a resting or calm state, those fine strands of muscle surrounding the arterioles relax and loosen their grip. The blood vessels in the fingers expand again, and the resulting increase in blood flow helps the fingers to warm up.

OK, so this is all well and good, but how is this of any practical use?

Well, by learing to consciously manage and reverse the effects of physiological stress (such as finger temperature) it enables a person to respond to stresses and challenges in their life in a more measured and relaxed way.

All this from learning to handwarm? Yes, this much wider benefit occurs because in order to learn control over a small area of bodily function (such as finger warmth), the person must gain conscious control over a much wider area of their nervous system – so the positive effects are also more widespread. The easiert way to appreicate this is to think of the effects of handwarming as being rather like the effects of turning the ignition key of your car. All that you're doing in that situation is to give a quarter-turn to a key, something which requires just two finger's worth of strength. And yet the effects of this tiny action are incredibly far-reaching, powering up engine, with all its complexities, systems and subsystems. In much the same way, the long-term benefits of using biofeedback to learn handwarming go far beyond simply warming up your fingers. By encouraging a wider calming of the nervous system, using biofeedback to learn handwarming, has a positive effect on the way both body and mind respond to any number of stressful events.
Skin temperature biofeedback is easy to use and learn. It has a high success rate and can be practiced and perfected using the eSense Temperature to bring about a general improvement in wellbeing. Detailed instructions are included with the app.

What's included in the eSense temperature package:
One Mindfield® eSense Temperature Sensor
One velcro strap for the Sensor
Free app from Mindfield via the App Store or Googly Play.

Which iOS Devices are Supported?
Apple® iPhone® from 4S
Apple® iPad® from 2nd Generation
Apple® iPod touch® from 5th Generation

Which Android Devices are Supported?
Android smartphones and tablets from Android 4.0 (but please note that your Android device will require a 3,5mm jack (headphone jack) for external microphones)

The following Android Devices are NOT supported?
Google Nexus 7
All Amazon devices

Important notice about Android devices: Your Android device needs a 3.5 mm input for external microphones/headsets. Most devices have this input, often included in the headphone jack. If no 3.5 mm input for external microphones is present, such as with the Google Nexus 7, you cannot use eSense. (All iOS devices specified above have this input.)

Some older Android devices which have a microphone jack will only work with eSense with a small adapter cable. This cable inverts the pin assignment of the 3.5mm microphone input. Each eSense is delivered with this adapter cable. If you find that your eSense does not work with your Android device, please use the adapter!
